How important is browser compatibility?

As a website owner and/or developer, it's important to know what your audience uses to access your site.  If your site works for you, but not for your visitors, that's potentially lost revenue.  It's extremely important to at least test your site in the top browsers to make sure you're not missing the mark(up) when it comes to how different browsers render your site. Even if the most popular browser(s) isn't what you use to peruse the web on a daily basis, as a developer/owner of your site you should make sure that the majority of the visitors don't run into problems. Tech blog Ars Technica presented the current browser trends based on data from Net Market Share that showcases the various browsers that are being used with the top browsers in order being:

  1. Internet Explorer (49.83%)
  2. Firefox (19.01%)
  3. Chrome (17.18%)
  4. Safari (9.05%)
  5. Opera (2.61%)
  6. Android Browser (1.32%)
  7. Other (2.33%)
